Via Combusta

Muhtariq, combust way, or burnt path.
This is considered to be the most malefic area of the zodiac. The classics of horary astrology advise against judging any horary chart casted when the Moon is in Via Combusta. Given the Moon’s importance in this branch of astrology, its placement in Via Combusta is one of its afflictions, and it indicates that the question will seldom come to a good end.
The Via Combusta was first mentioned by Al Biruni, who located it between the last part of Libra and the first part of Scorpio, withouth specifying its degrees. The malefic and dangerous nature attributed to this section of the zodiac is due to Libra and Scorpio being the signs where Saturn and Mars are exalted. Furthermore, Libra is the sign where the Sun is in fall, while the Moon is in fall in Scorpio. This is an area of the zodiac where luminaries are in fall while both malefics are in exaltation. Later astrologers believed it to extend from 15 degrees Libra to 15 degrees Scorpio, even though many contemporary astrologers tend to disagree with this extention considering it too neat, and also noticing that some benefic fixed stars are in the last degrees of the Via Combusta.
According to Maurice McCann the most dangerous section of the Via Combusta should be from 25 degrees Libra to 6 degrees Scorpio. The degrees from 25 to 30 Libra are the terms of Mars, and the degrees from 0 to 6 Scorpio are the terms of Saturn, while the remaining section of the Via Combusta is in the terms of benefic planets.
