Uranus is the modern ruler of the sign Aquarius, and is considered a "higher octave" of Mercury. In general it represents freedom, eccentricity, genius, synchronicity, invention, technology, revolutionary change, progressive ideals, flashes of insight, and everything that results from pure mind. When it was discovered on 13 March, 1781, by Sir Friedrich William Herschel it revolutionized, our view of the world and coincided with an upsurge of democracy in both France and North America (including the French revolution and the establishment of the new United States).

In Greek myth, Uranus was the sky god created by the earth mother Gaea, who then made him her husband. He is later castrated and dethroned by their son Cronus (Saturn). As a higher octave of Mercury, Uranus is also represented by the Greek god Hermes of the winged feet, who presided over inventions, knowledge, magic, communication, and was generally unpredictable. By extension, Uranus is associated with the Greek god Prometheus, who stole fire and gave it to humans, and by all such "trickster" gods and entities who promote progress through sheer cleverness and audacity rather than might. Using a little imagination, one could tie in the original myth of Uranus by saying that once Uranus was castrated by the heavy limitations of Saturn he learned to use mind instead of force to achieve his ends. He went underground and became a spokesperson for the masses, aligning transpersonally with the subconscious needs of people being oppressed by outdated systems of authority.

Orbit: Uranus takes 84 years to travel through the zodiac, resulting in an average of seven years in each sign, subject to retrogrades.

Synastric symbolism

In synastry Uranus indicates the most unconventional aspects of a relationship. Its analysis can reveal if and how one of the partners will induce the other to break social conventions and norms. It also indicates how big an amount of independence each of the partner will need. If in the synastry chart it is particularly stimulated it may indicate that the partners will spend more or less long periods of time being apart, or see each other occasionally. Uranus symbolizes a sudden and inexplicable attraction between two people.

In a synastry chart Uranus' aspects and placement can give indication on the following aspects of a relationship:

  • How one can help liberate their partner
  • Instability
