The twelfth house is associated with Pisces as its natural house ruler (as is shown in the whole house system). Therefore it will relate to places, activities and things which are ruled by Neptune (or Jupiter if you are a traditionalist).

Its meaning is also derived from its position relative to the horizon. The twelfth house is just above the Ascendant which is the horizon at the time of "birth" or whatever event the chart was cast for. As the Sun rises over the horizon it becomes momentarily hazy and diffused due to the atmosphere. At such a time the Sun is rising in power, it is no longer night. But this power is hidden and diffused; there is still some confusion as to one's surroundings.

In addition to the above analogies, the horoscope chart with its twelve signs and houses is often related to a journey from Aries (or first house) to Pisces (or twelfth). The twelfth house then becomes the last and final stage of life before death and rebirth. The ego is dismantled so that it can merge with the whole, only to be extracted again into a new personal journey as it moves into Aries.

In the same way, a planet residing in the twelfth house represents a planetary power which is active, but somewhat hidden. There may be some confusion or misperception about the issues or people represented by the planet, or the energies could be diffused and expanded in such a way that they are effective only when used holistically, and not egotistically. More than any other house, the twelfth represents the collective unconsciousness, and the individual as it merges into the whole.

Rulerships of the twelfth house

  • Places of escape or isolation. Monasteries, your own room, a quiet place in nature, your own head (meditation).
  • Places which are highly regimented such that individual differences and freedoms are minimized: prisons, strict boarding schools, mental institutions, religious cults.
  • Sources of escape through fantasy or imagination: films, books, day dreaming, delusions, and drugs.
  • Places the mind goes when it is not consciously controlled: dreams and astral travel.
  • Places or areas of life which hold things that are unseen by the native. This can include hidden enemies and ways in which the native undermines their own well being. It can also include mystical sources of help (or hindrance) from the "Universe". One can never find a logical reason for it but a clear pattern seems to exist.
  • As in the above, the source of conspiracies, attacks and patterns which are consciously put into play by others, but the native cannot see it, or determine who is the cause.
  • Areas of life which involve total surrender of the ego, such as in spiritual devotion or mental breakdown.
  • Meandering - ways in which one escapes from time, avoids planning, or avoids sticking to a schedule.
