The Sun represents will, authority, and what you would be if you were able to "shine" unfettered by fears, material constraints, memories, people or other limitations. It is the prime indicator of who we are, what we want to become, and why we came here. Aspects to the Sun represent how our original will is modified by other factors. The house of the Sun shows the area of life in which we find the most opportunity to "shine". The Sun sign indicates the true personality, but not necessarily how the native appears or acts, or even their self image. In the birth chart, the Sun gives indicators as to the native's father and male figures in relationships. However, despite being mirrored in male authority figures, the nature of the Sun is more like a child in that it represents the source of creativity, joy and spontaneity.
According to Marcus Manilius (1st century AD) in his epic (8000 verses) poem Astronomica, the Sun is benign and favourable, and presides over the head. It is usually thought to represent the conscious ego, the self, and the principles of creativity, spontaneousness, health and vitality - the life force. The Sun is the planetary ruler of Leo. In Chinese astrology, it represents Yang.

In a natal chart, the Sun gives indications about the native's Ego and personality, his/her vitality, identity and self-perception.
The Sun represents also male figures which are important in the querent's life, as the father and other male relatives, one's boss etc. In any case Mars and Saturn besides the Sun need to be examined to understand the importance this figures will have for the native.
In male nativities, the Sun indicates the native's virility and masculinity, and also his perception of his own virility. An analysis of the Sun will yield information as to how the native identifiees with his male role, if he has problems in integrating this role in his personality and how he can solve them. To obtain a complete picture of this side of the native male planets must be analyses, as well as their collateral aspects.
In female nativities the Sun represents the native's husband or lover, her vision - or ideal - of masculinity, and how the native will relate to men. The Sun can also indicate how the native perceives and adapts to the more "manly" sides of her personality. Sometimes it can indicate a tendency to assume a sexually dominating role.
If dignified and well aspected, the Sun can indicate the following qualities: loyalty, courage, generosity, optimism, human warmth. On the other hand if in a natal chart the Sun is in detriment and receives hard aspects, it is likely that the following qualitites will prevail: pride, megalomania, authoritarianism, paternalism, sexism, prodigality, superbness, arrogance, etc.
According to classical astrogers, those strongly marked by the Sun are of middle stature, well-built and strong, with the shoulders wider than the hips and an ample chest. Their complexion can be ruddy, they can have a round and large forehead, big, bulging eyes with a piercing look and wavy hair.
In a synastry chart the Sun's aspects and placement can give indication on the following aspects of a relationship:
Indications drawn by the Sun's analysis need to be confirmed by the analysis of other planets.
