The origins of smoky degrees are obscure. Together with dark, light, void, masculine and feminine degrees, and degrees of increasing fortune, there is a paucity of information about them and their use. Guido Bonatti used smoky, dark and pitted degrees to gauge the strenght of the Moon. All these different kinds of degrees were only mentioned by William Lilly. Smoky degrees are the following:
