The semisquare is an eighth harmonic aspect in which the angle formed by division is 45°. When two points are in semisquare it means that from a geocentric position on earth, the two bodies appear to be 1/8 of the way around zodiac from each other. The number 8 is equal to 2x2x2 and has the numerological significance of material achievement. Just as the semisquare is half the square, it has a similar nature but about half the force. When activated, the semisquare indicates drive and ambition. It is not a pleasant energy, but that actually makes it more useful as otherwise it might be too weak to encourage change. Since it promotes ambition, the result is to push something forward (which could possibly result in opposition from others). However, the end result should be positive if kept under control. Two points that are semisquared are not in the same gender, element or quality, therefore there is a lot of ambivalence and it is necessary to look to the individual planets, signs and houses to make an educated guess on how this energy is likely to manifest. Semisquares containing a cardinal sign and/or angular house may be more obvious. The speed and likelihood of action will also be affected by the quality of the houses, whether angular, cadent or succedent.

The semi-square is considered to be a minor hard aspect because it is thought to cause friction in the native's life and prompt her to take some action to reduce that friction. For example, if the Sun is posited in 10° Aquarius and Venus is posited in 25° Pisces then a semi-square would occur. This is thought to indicate that the native is not likely to be totally happy in matters of love. She is thought to have a tendency to seek out those individuals who are not necessarily compatible to her, and this may lead to a sense of tension and actions to correct what to her may be frustration.
