2008 has been a year that has heralded change on many levels. Some of these changes are already affecting America’s image as the richest nation in the world; the image of benefactor to others in need. The transits of the outer planets through the zodiac emphasize questions and possibilities that have been swept under the rug for too long. This article is primarily about certain issues that astrology relegates to 6th and 12th houses: health, nutrition, and work in the 6th, and disease, toxins, healing and hospitals in the opposite house, the 12th. The 6th house is the domain of Mercury-ruled Virgo, the 12th is assigned to Neptune and Pisces.
Some of our policies have encouraged us to act to protect ourselves at the expense of others. Other countries warned us that our idea of converting corn fields to use for ethanol only would greatly harm those who depended on us for food. Our country responded in a way that seemed to discount the basic needs of others in favor of producing fuel for our own economy. There were some how had no problem neglecting of the needs of other nations in favor of our own continued comfort. To many people, it came down to the illusion of “Us” versus “Them”. However, some believed these policies were not designed to protect the people, but rather only to "protect" corporate interests. Decisions made by our government to bend to corporate interests have now affected us all. And the outer planets show that we are already reaping what we have sown.
Regardless of what television advertising would encourage you to believe, some transits have shown a movement away from health and well being rather than towards it. What signs of the Zodiac represent healthcare? One is Mercury-ruled Virgo, the sign of health, nutrition, and health maintenance (Mercury carries the Caduceus). On the opposite side we have the other; Neptune-ruled Pisces, the sign of nursing and healing. Virgo is related to harvests, food, nutrition, cultivation, work, and service. Pisces represents the other end of the spectrum that nurses or heals those whose nutrition has been lacking, or who are ill or disabled; unable to work or provide service. You find hospitals, rehabilitation, and many issues relating to toxicity or disease within the sphere of Neptune and Pisces.
From 1959 to 1961, while Pluto was in Virgo and Saturn transited Capricorn, the largest and most widespread famine in known history occurred in China. Saturn in Capricorn represented the Chinese government’s role in both inadvertently creating and mishandling the situation. The Communist government’s position was to denounce the role of the working farmer, in the belief that farming was inferior to the progress of industry. A decision had been made to draw workers away from the fields in order to concentrate almost exclusively on producing steel. False statistics were then created to assure the public that there was enough food. Although droughts were blamed for part of the resulting disaster, most of the 20 to 30 million famine related deaths during those two years were due to the Chinese government’s policies. Saturn in Capricorn also assured that such “achievements” by those in power were done publicly. Journalist and writer Richard Rhodes actually labeled this great famine “public manmade death”. In the meantime, China’s industry did not profit, and no substantial amount of steel was produced.
We now find ourselves with Saturn in Virgo, and with Pluto beginning it’s entrance into Capricorn. (Pluto briefly entered the sign recently and went retrograde. It is due to return by the end of this year.) In a reversal of the positions of Saturn and Pluto during the Chinese famine, a smaller scale restriction of crops growth is evident. The impeded growth of plants is partially due to contaminants and flooding which may be attributed to Uranus in Pisces, opposite Virgo. Pisces, ruled by Neptune, governs not only water and its contaminants, but it also governs oil. This leads to the next reason we are facing food shortages. The large corporations (such as Archer Daniels Midland) and the government have urged many farmers to convert their fields to corn to increase production of ethanol, an idea which many politicians mistakenly adopted instead of considering other alternative fuel sources. Will Pluto’s entrance into Capricorn assure that the government has a hand in enforcing misguided policies, or will Pluto slowly break them down before they get out of hand?
Contaminants are affecting our foods on several levels at once. Although it all boils down to Neptunian or Piscean toxins and disease, the sources are varied: Fields flooded with chemicals and waste, fungus, salmonella, E.Coli and Norovirus; grains and produce tainted through carelessly supervised mass production procedures or and through contaminated water. Although Uranus assures that many of these food crises will appear to be sudden, in fact we have been contributing to this problem for a long time. The last time Saturn was in Virgo opposite Pisces we were facing an oil and fuel crisis similar to the one we have recently been facing. President James “Jimmy” Carter was pushing for adoption of alternative fuels, and energy conservation was encouraged. Although food shortages were not affecting us in an obvious way, places like Bangladesh and parts of Africa were dealt the blow.
Most of us did not immediately recognize the connection between Piscean fuel and chemical sources and the crops and harvests of Virgo; an association that has now become more obvious as energy sources are needed to cultivate, harvest and transport the fruits of the farmers’ labor, and as the necessary water and production sources become endangered with impurities. All coming from our planet’s yield of resources, in this case Virgo’s immaculate clarity has been compromised by rapidly spreading Piscean cloudiness. We see that industry, by producing contaminants, is often the enemy of nature. In the 1970s, many of us became ecologically aware, opting for smaller cars and fuel conservation methods. Although the Reagan Era slowly replaced this movement toward conservation with one of excess, many of us continued with the idea of conservation. In recent years, we’ve continued to emphasize industry over common sense, much like China did before the famine. What shall we harvest this time?
Uranus, which rules Aquarius, plays a large part in this while in mutual reception with Neptune. Like mad scientists out of control, we’ve been radiating foods and genetically altering grains so that they can’t reproduce on their own, and allowing them to contaminate normal crops. We widely distribute (both intentionally and unintentionally) Neptunian contaminants to "The People" (Aquarius). Uranus rules energy, including energy needed to create the fuel that in turn creates more energy. We already use our corn crops for dangerous high fructose corn syrup which creates an artificial “high” in humans, and encourages Neptunian addiction to foods. Now we are also using these corn yields in an attempt to addict all of society to ethanol as a source of fuel. To whose advantage is this? Perhaps we should look to wind and water for assistance, as Neptune dissolves Aquarian electric power and energy grids, and Uranian energy disperses within disintegrating Piscean clouds. Solar, anyone? Perhaps if the Neptunian clouds of Pisces part…
While we are presently looking at a potential shortage of grains and other foods, Saturn in Virgo with Uranus in Pisces is also contributing to a potential healthcare crisis, which Pluto can only alter when it begins to reform governments represented by Capricorn. We can hope that Uranus and Pluto will eventually assure advances in healthcare and healing, although much disruption is sure to come first. On the plus side, the mutual reception of Uranus in Neptune’s sign of Pisces while Neptune transits Uranus’ Aquarius territory does represent alternative treatments and energy healing. As health insurance structures and hospitals themselves become overwhelmed with financial shortages, new or mutant diseases, and systemic problems, more people may turn to alternatives in healthcare. However, nutrition may continue to be a problem for some time. We will be looking for new staples to keep in our pantries, and substituting other available products for wheat, corn, and even some produce.
Neptune in Aquarius in mutual reception with Uranus in Pisces contributes to contamination and toxins, in seed, food staples, and water. This placement also represents the spread of disease, mutations and “superbugs” to the general populace. With this configuration, weather abnormalities and sudden natural disasters affect the world’s population more frequently, and while Saturn is in Virgo opposite Pisces, we see this manifest more often in the areas of health and nutrition. At about the time Uranus leaves the Pisces, Neptune enters. Neptune has been in Aquarius for over a decade, and Uranus in Neptune’s sign of Pisces is the relative newcomer, having arrived in this sign in 2003. While in each other’s signs, they are in mutual reception. Although flooding and the increase of adverse weather conditions seem to have come on suddenly, it really hasn’t. Ecology is a holistic message that is partly associated with Aquarius, a sign that calls out to unite humankind and the world. Before Neptune entered Aquarius, we were on track to uniting people, governments and nations, and we were increasing environmental protections. However, Neptune in Aquarius eventually turned around the worldwide message of peace and holism, slowly eroding scientific credibility and obscuring the needs of humanity. At what cost? What are the consequences? Now that Uranus has been in Pisces opposite Virgo a few years, we see a regrettable harvest being reaped.
Pluto is a mostly hidden force, with those in power silently pulling strings. Although the influence of Capricorn may show the accomplishments of public figures, Pluto will press on towards more secretive activity, possibly undermining or even eliminating known government figures. With Pluto disintegrating the strength of governments with clandestine forces, much may remain hidden for some time. This influence will continue well over a decade, long after Saturn moves through several signs, and even as it opposes Virgo in Pisces. By the end of Pluto in Capricorn, some governments and structures may be unrecognizable. Governments will probably have to legislate a degree of food and fuel rationing, and the government may restructure healthcare in a way that we did not foresee. Will it be “By the People” and; “For the People,” or not? Our country, born on the 4th of July, is a Cancer baby, while Pluto is transiting through the opposite sign of Capricorn, working to change all we knew of America.
Capricorn is also the sign of foundations, structures, and our ultimate foundation and structure in this dimension: The Earth itself. It’s the sign of The Firmament, the ground, the dirt, the hills and mountains, the Tectonic plates…The earth of the Earth. Pluto here may silently erode, decay, or shift what has seemed immovable. We may see more earthquakes and volcanic activity. We may lose yet more fertile land for planting. If we are not overly attached to the material aspect of Life, we will find it easier to roll with the changes.
What we may find is that those of us who have less invested in what society values and more invested in our hearts and souls will often instinctively make the right choices, and will perhaps evolve during this period. Remember that Uranus in Pisces in mutual reception to Neptune in Aquarius can also bring on scientific advances in healing, and healing in alternative forms. It can bring in new waves of consciousness for some, and assists in the accelerated evolution of humanity. We are seeing beyond the veil... We learn to make choices via lightning intuition, and a sense of inner “knowing”. Previously unknown or unseen types of energy come into play to help us make the right decisions. A kind of ethereal presence, a connection to dimensions heretofore unrecognized, may have input in our progress. Previously undisclosed communications with more advanced beings may come out into the open.
Aquarius is rooting for us to get it right. During this mutual reception, healing on all levels is possible for many; even while Saturn in Virgo is opposite Uranus in Pisces. We see that while Neptune, like Pisces, breaks down the Ego, it also merges us with All That Is. We move closer to The Source that many call God: The Source from whence we came. We may recognize this as an opportunity to unite all sensient beings, and in doing so we regain our Aquarian humanity.
