Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun, and is the second-largest planet in the solar system after Jupiter. It orbits the zodiac in 29 years, with an average of two years per sign. Saturn has large rings consisting of mostly ice particles with a smaller amount of rocky debris. In English, it was named after the Roman god Saturn, which is the equivalent of the Greek god Kronos. Its glyph is a stylized representation of the god's sickle. Saturn is the furthest visible planet in the solar system, and it was the last known planet until the discovery of Uranus in 1781. Although there are many similarities in the way that different astrological traditions view and interpret Saturn's meaning in an astrological context, there are several different angles from which to approach the subject depending on the school of astrology. The following explanations are broken up into different categories in order to represent the interpretations of the various schools and traditions.

Mythology

In Roman mythology, Saturn was the son of Uranus and father of Jupiter and Ceres, among others. He presided over a festival called the Saturnalia, a festival in which moral standards were relaxed and in which slaves and masters traded places.

His Greek counterpart is Cronos.

In Hellenistic astrology Saturn is generally considered to be a malefic planet, although several authors say that it can be beneficial if well placed. It belongs to the diurnal sect, and is a masculine planet. In the Dorothean and Ptolemaic system of triplicities, it is the day ruler of the Air triplicity. Claudius Ptolemy says that it has the effect of cooling, and slightly drying1. Rhetorius says that it is cold and dry. The main Lot that is associated with Saturn is the Lot of Nemesis.

In modern Western astrology, Saturn is the Ruling Planet of Capricorn. It is associated with the principles of limitation, restrictions, boundaries, reality, crystallizing and structures. Many 20th century astrologers believe that after the discovery of Uranus, Saturn either lost rulership of Aquarius, or became a co-ruler of the sign of Aquarius along with the planet Uranus. Many modern astrologers still use Saturn as the planetary ruler of both Capricorn and Aquarius. Saturn is called "the Bringer Of Old Age" in Alan Leo's book What is a Horoscope?, and is considered to represent the part of a person concerned with long-term planning.

*Saturn is considered by some to be the 'secondary' ruler of Aquarius, while for others it is no longer associated with Aquarius.
