Fred West was 12 years old when Rosemary Letts was born in a maternity hospital on the North Devon coast near Westward Ho! Rosemary was the daughter of William and Daisy Letts. Bill Letts was not suited to family life because he had difficulty coping with noisy young children in the house. When he left the Navy he had a great deal of difficulty keeping a job, and he took out any resentments that he may have had on his family. Although he never admitted it to his family, Bill Letts had been diagnosed as schizophrenic, was prone to violent mood swings of persecution mania and aggression. Not surprisingly, Daisy Letts suffered from anxiety and depression, and was therefore subjected to electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) as a course of treatment. It was during the ECT treatment that Rosemary was conceived and grew to full term in her mother’s womb.

Not surprisingly, Rosemary was regarded by her father as “thick as a plank”, as she would sit rocking from side to side for hours at a time, staring into space. It should be noted that children who have been neglected will rock from side to side. The rocking, combined with staring into space, clearly appears to have been an attempt to dissociate from her surroundings. Bill Letts also took to sexually abusing Rosemary, just as Walter and Daisy West had abused Fred.

Rosemary soon adopted her father’s aggressiveness. She took to walking around the house naked when her parents were out, and bathing her brothers while she was alone in charge of them. It was not long before she started masturbating her brother while she was in bed with them. Finally tempting them into intercourse by straddling him. Being a victim of incest, Rosemary did what many people in similar circumstances did and directed her sexuality outward, losing her virginity at 14 and beginning affairs with older men. Fred, being 12 years her senior with two small children who needed looking after was a suitable candidate to begin a relationship with, therefore.

When Rosemary looked after Fred West’s step-daughter and daughter, she adopted rather brutal punishments, often hitting them with a wooden spoon. Fred never complained about the harsh punishments that his children received, but only told her to make sure that she hit the children where it would not show. Soon, Rosemary would have children of her own, ten in fact, who she could punish as she saw fit. She loved children while they were babies, but as soon as they started to develop personalities of their own, she would begin to exert her will over them.

Rosemary’s first born child, Heather, would die at the hands of her mother and father. What is surprising, however, is that Rosemary’s maternal instincts were practically non-existent and she did absolutely nothing to protect her daughter from Fred West’s perverse sexual urges. In fact, Rosemary told people that Heather was a lesbian and that she was not particularly bothered about what happened to her.

Unfortunately, women who are victims of incest often develop a rather warped attitude towards women in general. As a result of the abuse, they blame their mothers for failing to protect them, and their mothers blame them for stealing their husband’s bed. Many women who are victims of sexual abuse turn to women for love and affection because they feel that they cannot trust men. Many women who permit their husbands to sexually abuse their daughters do not see them as victims, but willing participants in the sexual act itself. It is for that reason that they feel that they must compete with their daughters, and therefore refuse to protect them or assist them in any way in this world. The women who were abused by their fathers will therefore grow up to believe that all men abuse their daughters. They in turn will find it difficult to believe that their own daughters are not engaging in sexual activities with their husbands, and will therefore perpetrate the cycle of abuse by their fathers and indifference by the mothers.

In order to earn money, Rosemary would work as a prostitute, having sex with men who her husband selected for her. She also participated in group sex and was involved in heavy bondage. It was often these bondage sessions that led Fred and Rosemary to lose control of the situation, which would lead to the death of their victims. The women who they killed often met their demise in a ritualistic fashion. They often had their limbs amputated while they were still alive, some were scalped, they were all decapitated and had their legs cut from the bodies, and finally buried in a small hole in the ground, in the cellar or under the patio of 25 Cromwell Street.

It was not until Fred began having full sexual intercourse with one of his younger daughters. She was so upset about this that she confided the abuse to a friend, who when on to confide it to the local policeman on the street. It was at that point that the authorities became involved and removed the children from the West home.

One of the determining factors regarding the removal of the children from the home was the fact that the authorities had found a selection of home made pornographic videos of which Rosemary was the star. When Rosemary realised that her participation in the videos was a determining factor in the removal of the children, she took the camcorder to the shop and refused to participate in any such videos ever again.

Rosemary was very sad that her children had been removed from her home, and made every effort to cooperate with Social Services and see her children at their convenience. Even after Rosemary had been in prison for quite a few years, she stated that she was quite happy to stay in prison for the rest of her life because, while in prison, she would be able to see her children and grandchildren. Out of prison, however, Social Services would prevent her from having contact with her children in her own way, but her life experiences prevented her from expressing it in a positive fashion.

After Rosemary had her children removed from her care, she adopted two dogs to keep her company during the day. In addition, she took to compulsive eating, which was an attempt on her part to come to terms with her past. Not surprisingly, many people who have been sexually abused develop eating disorders. It is also important to remember that before Rosemary ever abused anyone, she herself was abused.

Rosemary West has a very unusual chart in that there is not one opposition, which would have added balance to the horoscope. All of the aspects are formed between the signs of Gemini and Scorpio, which further focuses the energies in the chart. In addition, there are no major aspects to the Sun, which indicates that there are no stabilising forces to balance out her solar energies.

Rosemary’s Sun is posited in the sign of Sagittarius, which sextiled Fred West’s sun, which was in the sign of Libra. The midpoint of the two signs was in the sign of Scorpio, which represents sex, death, and prostitution, all of which were favourite pass times of Fred and Rosemary West. Because Rosemary’s Sun was in the rather expansive sign of Sagittarius, which indicates that she was an ambitious, forward thinking person who aspired to great things. Because she had no formal qualifications and no job prospects, she sold the only thing that she had to sell – her body. Another interesting thing about Rosemary’s Sun is the fact that it did not make any major aspects to any other planets or points. It was therefore very highly solarised, making Rosemary a very me-centred person indeed. Perhaps a solar aspect would have added a bit more nuance to her character and would have given her other interests in this life.

Rosemary’s Moon was in Virgo, which indicates that the relationship she had with her own mother was somewhat stale. Her mother suffered from severe depression and was administered ECT shock treatments while Rosemary was conceived and during the entire gestational period. When she was born, not surprisingly, she would rock and stare into space for hours on end. What is surprising is the fact that the medical professionals continued to administer shock treatment to Rosemary’s mother when they knew that she was expecting a child. Because Rosemary’s mother was so depressed, she was not entirely capable of looking after a family. It is for that reason that as Rosemary matured, she was required to take on more responsibility around the home, which included satisfying her father’s physical needs. Whenever a mother and daughter are engaged in an incestuous relationship with the husband/father, this has the effect of poisoning the mother/daughter relationship. Although the mother can feign ignorance and swear that she had no idea that her husband was having an incestuous relationship with her daughter, the fact of the matter is that surely she would have at the very least suspected that something was amiss in paradise. It is for that reason that when a woman declares that she had no idea that her husband was abusing her daughter, she is either in denial or downright lying. The mother is jealous of the daughter for replacing her in the marital bed, and the daughter resents the mother for failing to protect her. Unless one goes through a period of deep self analysis and reflection to heal the hidden wounds, it is highly likely that the cycle of abuse will perpetrate itself onto the next generation, creating yet another group of people who are abused and then go on to abuse.

Rosemary’s Moon forms a sextile to her Pluto, which refers to the rather brutal relationships that she had with other women. It is common knowledge that women who have been sexually abused or raped by men often develop lesbian tendencies. The problem may not be so much that they are homosexual, but that men have let them down so badly, they do not feel that they can trust them. Although Rosemary did not trust men, she did not trust women either, which harks back to her childhood experiences, where her own mother betrayed her time and time again, such as when she failed to protect her when her father took her into his bed. It seems that Rosemary was in a difficult situation, as is the case with so many survivors of child sexual abuse: she did not trust men and she did not trust women either, which is why she was so brutal with the women who she became acquainted with. One thing that Rosemary did love, however, was children, which was why she was so eager to get pregnant time and time again. Unfortunately, when her children began to develop personalities of their own, she would attempt to control them, using violence if necessary. Another important point to note is that while Rosemary loved her own children, she did not care for other people’s children, which is why she felt no need to protect Rena West’s two children from violence and abuse. The Moon forming a square to Jupiter indicates that Rosemary had a bit of a temper, which was due to many unresolved conflicts that she had with her family.

Rosemary’s personality disorder was very much as sociologically inherited condition from her family. While a great deal has been written about her father’s schizophrenia, Rosemary’s mother suffered from severe depression, which was an understandable reaction to finding oneself married to a man with a sever psychological disturbance. Rosemary’s mother, suffering from depression, was in no state to look after or protect her children from harm. It is for that reason that Rosemary harboured a great deal of resentment towards her mother. Because Rosemary could not openly express her feelings of disappointment towards her mother, she expressed it through her very violent relationship with other women and her children.

Because Rosemary’s Mercury is placed in Scorpio, she is an in depth thinker. Unfortunately, she has a strong desire for revenge, and this tends to manifest itself through the Venus conjunction by her bondage sessions toward men, women, and some children. Rosemary’s Venus in Scorpio indicates that she was pre-disposed to a rather provocative sexual nature. The fact that she was an incest survivor indicates that she responded to the sexual abuse that she endured by becoming obsessed with sex and in turn abusing others. Perhaps if Rosemary had less damaging childhood experiences, she could have used the transcendental qualities of Venus in Scorpio in a more positive fashion. Venus forming a quincunx to Jupiter shows that Rosemary had a great deal of difficulty showing love and affection to children, which is a direct result of the incestual abuse that she had been subjected to as a child. Not knowing any other way of life, Rosemary therefore mingled cruelty with her relationships with children, which is a shame, really. There is every indication to believe that Rosemary genuinely cared about her children; she just did not know how to express it in a positive fashion.

Venus forms a trine to the Uranus/South Node, which again points to a very incestuous relationship in the home. Although rosemary’s father was for the most part the primary perpetrator of the abuse, her mother was an accomplice because she turned a blind eye to the incest that was occurring under her very nose. Rosemary then began abusing her younger mothers, making the incest a family affair. When Rosemary matured, she further carried out the incestuous nature of her familiar experience by abusing her own and other people’s children. Venus forming a square to Pluto again reflects the rather extreme way that her sexuality was expressed. It shows quite clearly the incest that she experienced as a child, which resulted in her highly sexualised behaviour towards other children while still a child herself. It also is an indicator that she had been raped when she was a teenager and that she and Fred had what can only be described as a rather perverse sexual relationship, which is believed to have even included snuff films, death being a theme represented in her sexual nature.

Mars is posited in Libra, which indicates that Rosemary put a great deal of effort into her personal relationships. The Mars influence shows very well that these relationships were quite violent, and she did not hesitate to use knives, belts, and any other instruments that could be used to harm another person. Mars forming a square to the Uranus/South Node conjunction indicates that Rosemary was somewhat impetuous with regard to her personal relationships. She had many sexual partners, both men and women. In addition, she had abusive relationships with children. It does not appear that Rosemary gave a lot of thought to the nature of her sexuality because sexual abuse had been a part of her family from such a young age. Rosemary would have faired much better if she had thought about the repercussions of her actions, but since she had a learning disability, it would have been somewhat difficult.

Rosemary loved children and young people, and she had lots of them. When she became acquainted with Fred West, she worked as a nanny and looked after Fred’s children for him while he was at work. When she was a teenager she looked after her two younger brothers and unfortunately she enjoyed dominating them. Jupiter forms a trine to the Neptune/Mars conjunction indicates that it was very easy for Rosemary to deceive herself about the true nature of her personal relationships. Perhaps when the bondage sessions got out of hand, it is quite possible that she did not have any idea just how brutal she could be. This configuration also indicates that Rosemary was able to earn money through her prostitution. Her husband even helped her with her prostitution business, as he often provided clients for her. Jupiter forming a sextile to Pluto indicates that the financial situation at home could go into extremes, as sometimes there was not enough money available to pay for essential bills in the home. This aspect also indicates that not only was Rosemary happy to work as a prostitute, she was happy to introduce children into prostitution, as she did her step-daughter, Anne-Marie. Neptune placed in Libra indicates that Rosemary had some very unrealistic expectations of her personal relationships, which was not helped by the fact that Mars was forming a conjunction, thereby instilling a certain element of force in her relations with others. Rosemary was able to quite easily live in a state of denial about what was actually happening within the confines of her personal relationships.

Pluto in Leo indicates that Rosemary would inevitably need to transform her ideas about love and children. Pluto is the planet of death, force and total control, which just happens to be placed within the sign of children, love, and romance. Rosemary herself endured some rather traumatic experiences while she was in her mother’s womb, and such experiences continued throughout her childhood. She was subjected to abuse and she in turn abused. It was not until she was taken into custody that she was given an opportunity to reflect upon her experiences that led her to behave in the manner that she did. It is for that reason that her relationships with those individuals who she loved would have to transform before she could see the error of her ways.

Rosemary’s North Node is posited in the sign of Capricorn, which indicates that she needed to exercise more traditional values, which would have helped her in the more turbulent times of her life. The South Node in Cancer indicates that while she loved children, she was not really cut out for family or domestic life. While Rosemary had a family, she did not possess the skills necessary to properly care for it.
