The Signs are classified by their Qualities: Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable. Also referred to as modalities or quadruplicities. Each of the signs in the same quality are always at a 90 degree angle or square to each other. The four cardinal signs mark the points of the two Equinoxes (Spring and Autumn) and the two Solstices (Summer and Winter) in the Northern Hemisphere. The cardinal quality is characterized by action, planets in cardinal signs push us to get things done but they energy might not last long enough to finish the task. The fixed quality is characterized by stability. Planets in fixed houses represent stability but also a reluctance to change. The mutable quality is characterized by adaptibility and indicates ease in changing circumstances. The qualities are usually considered along with the elements when judging a chart.
