A transit occurs when a planet traveling in its orbit around the sun creates an aspect to a planet, point or house cusp in the natal chart. A transit can also occur whenever a planet enters a new sign or house. Transits show how the primary energies are affecting an individual's life at a given point in time. Although they are sometimes used to predict actual events (along with progressions and solar arc directions), these events may vary based on the individual's mental state and likelihood of projecting repressed issues onto the environment. In other words, the transits are an accurate representation of the forces at work, but how those forces manifest in the native's life may depend on the psychological maturity of the individual. Many noted astrologers such as Robert Hand in the book Planets in Transit, have stated a belief that transits represent the soul's intentions rather than fated events. In astrology, transits can be used to determine what the soul wishes to encounter in order to actively work with the Universe in the process of self-education. In some cases, this may actually internalize disturbing experiences that would otherwise manifest as events thrust upon us from the outside world. For example, suppose a person has Pluto opposing their natal Mars. This could result in encountering an aggressive person or a violent episode. However, the intention of this transit is probably to learn how to deal with repressed anger and other martian issues. Therefore if this person remains aware of their anger and deals with their feelings responsibly (perhaps through communication, exercise or meditation) no violence is likely to occur. As long as these intense subconscious feelings are not repressed, the energy is able to be released.
