The planet Neptune is associated with illusion, deception, religions, spirituality, the mass media, music, drugs, extreme sensitivity, psychic phenomena and altered mental states. The discovery of Neptune in 1846 coincided with the discovery of anesthetics and hypnotism around this period.
For some Western astrologers, Neptune is the ruling planet of Pisces. Prior to the discovery of Neptune, Jupiter was considered the ruler of Pisces, and some modern astrologers consider Jupiter a co-ruler of Pisces. Some astrologers do not believe that Neptune rules any particular sign, even though they may use the planet in chart interpretation.
Neptune symbolises total and complete freedom, freedom of movement, freedom of thought and from all rules, restrictions and social conventions. Differently from Uranus, the desire for freedom does not entail the subversion of social conventions. Neptune’s influences involve passivity and contemplation rather than action, so the “action†of this planet will occur in a non-confrontational way. The refusal of what is normal will entail an escape from reality rather than any concrete effort at changing things. In some rare cases the rejection of reality and normality will result in the native’s geniality. In many more cases the will to be different from the masses of those who are normal will result in the native’s creativity, fantasy and love for art and music. The will to withdraw from the world into an higher realm may however take a different direction, resulting in the native’s mysticism and interest for spirituality. If it receives hard aspects, the escape from reality may take the form of a drug or an alcohol addiction. Another of Neptune’s influences if that of reducing to a smaller size by lengthening and shrinking.
The sign placement and aspects of Neptune will also indicate the native’s resistance to infectious diseases and the overall conditions of his immune system. Neptune’s action is one of metamorphosis, of distorting things, of altering their appearances in order to make them more pleasant and acceptable. Hence Neptune rules all forms of lies and deception, besides all processes of expansion and dilatation. If it receives hard aspects, Neptune may indicate the native’s fear of change, or otherwise give indication about possible mental and emotional disorders, addictions and self-indulgence. If dignified and well aspected the contestation and rejection of normality may take an entirely different road. The native may be fond of long travels, engage in scientific or philosophic research to satisfy his restlessness and curiosity, his will to discover what is unknown and change his view of the world.

There is a lack of data on to the effect Neptune may sort on the native’s body. Influences of this planet that seem mostly related to the body are those of elongating and darkening. They may indicate that Neptunians are thin, not particularly tall, with a sinewy and slightly muscular body, round features and long hands with slender fingers and a dark complexion. In the most extreme cases and if in the natal chart Neptune is heavily stimulated, the native may sport several tattoos.

In synastry, soft aspects to Neptune can indicate a deep identification with the other, the desire to reach a state of total, osmotic unity. Sexual intercourse is not necessarily one of the means through which this communion can take place. An intuitive understanding of the other and insights into the innermost depths of his soul are some of the dynamics indicated by Neptune. Sometimes aspects to this planet can indicate platonic relationships, or relationships where exceptional tenderness and care play a big role. Hard aspects can indicate an excessive romanticism and day-dreaming. In the worst cases one of the partners may simply deceive or defraud the other, and then suddenly vanish.
In a synastry chart the Neptune's aspects and placement can give indication on the following aspects of a relationship:
Indications drawn by Neptune's analysis need to be confirmed by the analysis of other planets.
