According to Manilius, the planet Mars is ardent, and presides over the genitals. Called "The Bringer Of War" in Alan Leo's What is a Horoscope?, since the planet is associated with the Roman god of war, Mars in Western astrology is associated with confident and aggressive personalities. It is also associated with the principles of energy, ambition and drive.

Mars is considered the ruling planet of Aries. Before the discovery of the planet Pluto, it was also considered the ruler of Scorpio. Most modern astrologers consider Pluto the ruler of Scorpio, but may regard Mars as a co-ruler, while some more traditional astrologers still regard Mars as the only ruler of Scorpio.

In Chinese astrology, Mars is ruled by the element fire.

If Mars is rising, culminating or otherwise strong in the chart the native will be of a middle stature, with a ruddy complexion, broad shoulders and a dry and hot skin. The body is naturally firm, toned and muscular. Even in those cases in which the native is slightly overweight, he will give a general impression of firmness and strength. In many cases the native is stronger than most people of the same age, sex and built. The eyes have a fiery gaze. Sometimes one or two deep lines between the eyebrows can be observed. Several scars may be present on the body, too. According to William Lilly if Mars is in airy or watery signs or conjunct to Fixed stars of its own nature the hair could be auburn, if it is in earthy signs it will be darker and if in watery signs conjunct to fixed stars of its own nature the hair may be platinum blonde. A strong placement of Mars can indicate curly or wavy hair.

Furthermore the native may show one or more of the following:

  • a red tinge in the hair, or a pointed hairline
  • whenever he can the native tends to wear accessories which are big and heavy
  • a preference towards amphibious shoes, combat boots and very resistant and heavy shoes can be sometimes noticed, if of course the native’s profession and lifestyle allow him to wear these or similar model of shoes
  • a fondness for military and/or law enforcement gear
  • love for big cars as pick ups, four wheelers and off-roaders.

None of these indications should be taken literally. They are to be adapted to elements as the native’s profession, lifestyle, educational level, social class, cultural background and other similar variables. Astrological factors to consider in trying to determine the native’s appearance from his chart include elements as Mars’ dignities; sign and house placements; its aspects; the placement and aspects of Mars’ dispositor; planets in Aries and Scorpio etc.
