Editing your user page

Hopefully you still have your second browser window up. If not, just look at the top right of this browser window for your AstrologyNotes user name with a person icon next to it. Right click over your user name and choose "open in new window". Keep this window up so you can follow along.

Your user page should be in "edit" mode, if not click "edit" on the tabs across the top. You should see an editing window with a toolbar on the top. If you don't see a toolbar please ensure you are using either the IE or FireFox browser.

The edit toolbar

This bar does not have buttons for all the special wiki code, but it does have the most commonly use ones. In supported browsers you can select the text you wish to codify then click the button and it adds the appropriate wiki tags. If you click without selecting text, it inserts the code with sample text included. In non-supported web browsers, clicking on the button just gives you an explanation of how the wiki tag can be used.

1. Button one makes text bold
2. Button two makes text italic
3. Button three adds a wiki link (an internal link)
4. Button four adds an external web page link
5. Button five adds a level one heading
6. Button six includes an image tag
7. Button seven includes a media tag (e.g. sound)
8. Button eight includes a math tag (not used much here)
9. Button nine includes a nowiki tag to show wiki code without execution
10. Button ten includes your timestamp (use this to sign your discussions and vote)
11. Button eleven includes a horizontal rule

Add extended buttons to the edit bar

Unfortunately, the button I would really like us to use is not on this toolbar. So, we are going to add some more! First, go up to the tabs across the top and click on the tab that says "user page". This is how your page looks now - most likely blank. Now go to the address bar on the top of the browser. It should say something like: http://astrologynotes.org/User:YourName (substituting your user name for 'YourName'). change it to:

http://astrologynotes.org/User:YourName/monobook.js?action=edit

then click enter. You will see a blank page. Copy and paste the following code into the edit window and hit the "save page" button at the bottom:

You should now see a bunch of text on the page that starts with "document.write...". Go to the user buttons and the top right of the browser window and click your username. You will be back to your user page. You should be on the edit window (if not, click the edit tab). You should now see many more buttons on the toolbar!

Position your cursor in the edit window and click on the button that looks like this:

You will now see a template in your edit window. Fill out the template with whatever you want, you can leave the rest blank.
