How to log in

In order to create an account to edit the Wiki, you must first create an account in the Forums. This is so that they can use the same password database. First, make sure cookies are enabled in your browser. Click on the Member Forum and then click 'Register'. Fill out the information and submit. Then log into the Wiki with the SAME login and password as you created in the Forum.

If you are worried about privacy you don't need to supply your real name but do supply a valid email address. It will not be used for any purpose other than informing you about the site and notifying you about your watched pages (if you have that option set in preferences). If you choose to allow mail from other users, they will be able to send email to your address through the Wiki but they won't be able to find out what the address is. You will also be able to have your password emailed to you in case you lose it.

When you log into the Wiki, check your preferences page (in Monobook skin this is a link at the very top right of the browser window). If you click the check box Remember me, you will not have to log in again when accessing AstrologyNotes from the same computer. Note that some firewall and ad-blocking software may interfere with the cookie that AstrologyNotes uses to keep a person logged in. If a user encounters problems remaining logged in, these programs may be a cause.

Your page

There are many things you can do with your own user space. You can change your viewing and editing preferences (see below). You can look at your personal discussions with other members (those who have written to your talk page) and you can view your past revisions and watched pages.

You have your own User page which you can fill with information about yourself, a picture or horoscope (you will need to upload them first through Special:Upload). You can showcase your AstrologyNotes projects here and create subpages and link to them. If you want to link to your user page within AstrologyNotes simply type [[User:Myname]] where "Myname" is your AstrologyNotes nickname.

You also have a User talk page. You can access this by clicking on the Talk link next to your username at the top right of the page. Other people may write messages in your user talk page by editing it, and you can respond.

Log in problems

If you appear to be able to log in, but as soon as you try to look at a page after the 'Log in successful' page you appear logged out again, it is very likely to be a cookie problem. If you are certain that cookies are enabled, make sure that you haven't inadvertently listed AstrologyNotes on a list of sites to never allow cookies for. (This feature is available in (at least) Mozilla Firebird (Firefox) 0.6 and above and Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 and above). Also make sure your computer's date and time are set correctly; if they are not, cookies may expire before they are supposed to.

A user may occasionally find him/herself "automatically " logged out in between beginning an edit and saving it, or when switching between multiple AstrologyNotes pages open in multiple windows. This can be a result of your browser's cookie, cache, or firewall settings, but due to the nature of the AstrologyNotes software, some user ID information is stored in the servers; sometimes, especially during heavy server load, the system can "glitch" and your ID information will be misplaced, resulting in a logout. Regardless of the reason for the logout, the simplest solution to the problem is to check the Remember me box. If you do this on a computer that can be accessed by more than one person (i.e. at the library, at work, at school), please find and erase your user ID cookies after your editing session.

How to set preferences

Click on the Preferences link at the top right of the page for various options, including: Under "User Data:

  • Change password.
  • Remember password across sessions. Enabling this feature will place an HTTP cookie in your browser's cache, so you do not have to log in each time you visit.
  • Add email

Under Edit:

  • Rows, Columns. Here you can set up your preferred dimensions for the textbox used for editing page text.
  • Edit box has full width. If this box is checked, the edit box (when you click "Edit this page") will be the width of the browser window, minus the quickbar width.
  • Show edit toolbar. In compatible browsers, a toolbar with editing buttons can be displayed.
  • Show preview on first edit - when pressing the edit button or otherwise following a link to an edit page, show not only the edit box but also the rendered page, just like after pressing "Show preview". This is especially useful when viewing a template, because even just viewing, not editing, typically requires both.
  • Show preview before edit box and not after it. If you select this option, the preview will be displayed above the edit box when you click the "Show preview" button while editing a page.
  • Add pages you edit to your watchlist. If this option is selected, any pages that you create or modify will be automatically added to your watchlist.
  • Mark all edits minor by default. This option automatically selects the "This is a minor edit" checkbox when you edit pages. Be careful if you do this, major edits should always be noted as such.

Under time zone:

  • Time diff. This is the number of hours to be added or subtracted from UTC to find your time zone for your timestamp. If the server doesn't recognize your time zone then you can go to this site to figure out your time difference.

Under recent changes:

  • Number of titles on recent changes: You may select the number of changes which will be shown by default on the Recent Changes and Watchlist page. Once on those pages, links are provided for other options.
  • Hide minor edits in recent changes. Registered users may choose to mark edits as being minor (meaning fixes too trivial for trusting users to check up on). It applies to Recent Changes and Enhanced Recent Changes, but not to the Watchlist. It also affects Related changes, but currently in an odd way: if the last edit of a page linking to the current page was minor, then neither that nor the last major change is shown.
  • Enhanced recent changes (not for all browsers). Group recent changes per day by article, display the titles of the changed articles in order from new to old latest change, or in the case of hiding minor edits, latest major change.
  • Threshold for stub display: see Stub feature.
  • Limit images on image description pages - allows you to limit the size of pictures displayed. If you have a very high or very low resolution you may want to change this.

Under Search:

  • Here you can adjust your search results. The defaults are best for most users. The option "lines to show per hit determines how far the search engine will go into each article to look for hits to the search term.

Under Miscellaneous

  • "Show hoverbox" is redundant since most newer browsers already do it.
  • For the same reasons, all links may or may not be underlined already.
  • The two alternative displays for broken links are red text with underline or a question mark.
  • You can justify text
  • You can autonumber headings
  • The "enable edit on double click" option requires javascript.
  • You can enable/disable the little edit links for sections
  • You can enable edit by right click on title
  • You can enable/disable showing the table of contents
  • you can disable page caching if you keep getting outdated displays.

How to log out

You can log out any time by clicking on the Log out link at the top right of the page.

Do not create more than one account

It is considered bad to have more than one login name and edit pages under both names, this is called a "sockpuppet". Other users will not be able to track your revisions correctly. If you have problems with your current login just change the user data or contact the managing editor (there is a link on the main page). The accounts and the associated revision history cannot be deleted.
