The point of harmonics is basically to break the chart down into smaller pieces in order to see the fine divisions between one moment and the next. Each moment in time is infinitely divisible into smaller portions. When you take this basic premise and apply it to the natal chart what you get is many new charts that either support of weaken the main natal chart, but they don’t change its fundamental nature. Thus the main purpose of a harmonic chart is to show mitigating factors within the main chart in question.

Vedic astrology uses harmonic charts extensively, and has done so for hundreds of years now, and western astrology has just recently starting to work with this technique extensively over the past 50 years or so, largely due to the pioneering work of John Addey. The vast majority of the existing work on harmonic charts comes directly from Vedic astrology due to this techniques long tradition in that system of astrology, and the Hindu outlook on spirituality is tied up in and colors the way that harmonic charts are looked at by Vedic astrologers, and so concepts of karma and reincarnation are sort of inherent in that system, although they don't necessarily have to be depending upon your fundamental philosophical outlook.

The main harmonic that has been used by western astrologers since the Hellenistic era is the 12th harmonic or dwadishamsha - dwad for short. It is the easiest to calculate because you just divide each sign into 12 equal sections of 2 degrees and 30 minutes. The first 1/12 of each sign is the same as the sign itself, with the rest counted off in order through the zodiac. So, the first 2'30 of Scorpio would be Scorpio-Scorpio, and then the second 2'30, from 2'30 to 5 degrees Scorpio would be Scorpio Sagittarius, and then from 5 to 7'30 would be Scorpio - Capricorn, and then 7'30 to 9 would be Scorpio - Aquarius, and so on and so fourth. Every sign can be divided up like this, and in doing so we can begin to see the real complexity of each birth chart, and also the uniqueness of each passing moment.

Vedic astrologers utilize harmonics by casting a whole sign house chart with the divisional sign of the ascendant as the first house, and then placing all of the other planets in their various signs and houses depending upon which harmonic sign they fall in. For example, if your ascendant was at 26’45 Leo in your natal chart, then that would fall in the division of Aquarius for the 12th harmonic. So, your 12th harmonic chart would have Aquarius rising, with all of the other planets placed in various signs and houses depending upon what harmonic they fall into in the natal chart. However, if you were born a bit later, and you had 28’41 Leo rising for example, then that would fall in the division of Pisces in that sign, so in the 12th harmonic chart you would have Pisces rising, which would change the house positioning of all of the other planets in the harmonic chart. That is where the real complexity of the astrological system really begins to set in.
