Bestial sign

In the field of astrology bestial signs are those astrological signs that represent animals. They are sometimes referred to as quadrupedian, or four-footed signs because they represent animals that walk on all four legs. These animals are inarticulate, which means they have voices, but their power of speech is not developed. The bestial signs in the zodiac are Aries, Taurus, Leo and Capricorn.

It is interesting to note that Capricorn is among the bestial signs because in antiquity this sign was associated with the sea goat and was considered a water sign because Capricorn occurred during the rainy season. As the art of astrology evolved the symbol of the sea monster fell into disfavour, so it was attributed to the seagoat, which is a creature with the head and upper body of a goat and the lower body of a fish, thus attempting to integrate some earthy elements into the still watery sign. In modern times, however, astrologers have attempted to eradicate the once accepted watery element of this sign and turn it into a purely Earth sign, and have therefore done away with the seagoat in favour of the mountain goat. One has to wonder, therefore, if when Capricorn was a water sign was it still considered bestial?
