Organizing AstrologyNotes

Keeping AstrologyNotes organized, readable, searchable and generally easier to use is a daunting task. It requires the dedication of all AstrologyNotes authors, and it is not the sole job of any one person or group of people. When a new article is created, the author can place it in the right category and section (this is best done through the use of category templates). If this is not possible, the author could post a list of their newly created links on an Administrator's talk page and asked for assistance. This benefits both AstrologyNotes and the author, because their articles will be more noticeable and complement the rest of the site.

Place articles in the appropriate category & section

When creating a new article, please take some time to determine the best category. A list of categories is described in Template:Category templates (shown at the end of this article). We have designed a very easy way to insert a category along with all the associated menus and headers. For example, if your article is called Foobar and the best category for it is Foo, you simply add the template Foo to the top of your article. This process is more thoroughly described below.

Note that some categories may be confusing. For example, birth and biographical data about people belongs in category People or one of its subcategories, but an interpretation on a person's birth chart belongs in category [[Category:PeoplePersonal Interpretations|Personal Interpretations.

Link from the Glossary if appropriate

If your article is in the Reference section, please link it from the Glossary of astrological terms.

Update lists and sub menus if necessary

If your article adds an additional item to an existing list of items, update the list. For example, if there is a menu or list template for asteroids and you add an article for an asteroid not already on the list, go to the template page and add it.

Category templates

AstrologyNotes is now organized by category templates, which insert into each article page the appropriate categories, headers and navigation that is associated with that category. All existing categories should have an associated template, if not you can create one or email an Administrator to create one for you.

Why use the templates?

This should be a good change which will make things much more clean, organized and easy to set up, once people get used to it.

  1. The category pages will now be easier to read and no longer include both links to subcategories and the articles inside those subcategories, instead they will be neatly organized into links to subcategories and top level articles only.
  2. Users who create articles no longer need to know what parent categories, navigation menus, lists or headers to put in them, this is all handled by the templates.
  3. When any changes need to be made to the menus, links, headers, etc., this can all be seamlessly changed by simply changing the template associated with the category instead of editing all the individual pages.
  4. The structure of the website becomes more uniform and easier for members to understand, making it easier to navigate, update and avoid lost or orphaned pages.

Using the templates

Whenever you make a new page you should be able to simply add one template at the top to include the main category and all headers and menus that go with that category. For example, suppose I add a page for the planet Jupiter. I know this page should go in the (Planet category). I place the template Planet at the top of the article page for Jupiter, and this template puts the article in the Planet category by inserting the link ). However, it also inserts the header for the Planet category, and the menus associated with Planets. Note templates have double curly brackets, whereas categories by themselves are placed with regular wiki links.

Insert the template

The category templates all have the same name as their associated category. To place an article in a particular category, you insert the template with the same name as that category. For example, to place article X in category Y, you would insert template Template:Y.

Avoid redundancy

Please do not add additional categories that are already in the parent tree of the template category. Consider our previous example of the article page Jupiter. Jupiter is inside the Planet category which is itself within the Point category, which is inside the Common Elements category. The author should not add either of those two parent categories to the Jupiter page because that would be messy and the category pages would be full of redundant links making it harder to find things. Note that redundant categories do NOT make the article easier to find either by searching or by browsing.

If the author wants to add an additional category they can do so by adding a normal category link. Going back to our example, suppose we want to add a category called Benevolent points to the Jupiter article. We could add that category by placing in the article source. Since the category Benevolent points does not already exist in the parent tree of the category Point, it is not included in the template and it would need to be added.

Creating a new template

The procedure to create these templates is as follows:

  1. Choose an appropriate header file. The header files for the six main sections are as follows
    1. Reference header (view)
    2. Interps (view)
    3. Research header (view)
    4. Essays header (view)
    5. Astrologynotes header (view - currently empty)
    6. Help header (view - currently empty)
  2. Create a template for the category with the same name as the category you are creating it for. For example, if the category is Foobar, the associated template would be Foobar, and would be inserted by typing Foobar. You can create the template by either:
    1. Typing Template:Foobar (or whatever) in the search box and pressing Go, then clicking on the red link at the top.
    2. First typing Foobar in the article source then clicking on the red link to Template:Foobar to create it.
  3. The new template should contain the following:
    1. An appropriate header template for that section (see above)
    2. A link for the new category (e.g. )
    3. Any appropriate subheaders or menus. For example, see the article Sun for an item in the planet category that contains the Planet template. This includes two sub navigation menus.
  4. Click on the red link to the new category inside the template to edit it. You can also type Category:Foobar in the search box and press Go, then click on the red link at the top. On the category page, put the following:
    1. The parent category of the new category. For example, Category:Planet is a subcategory of Category:Point and so the category page of Category:Planet contains Template:Point (it is inserted by typing Point.
    2. The template Putincategory should be inserted to inform users on how to use the associated category template. See Category:Planet for an example.
  5. Finally, add a description of your new template to Template:Category templates (see below).
