AstrologyNotes:Attributed article

From AstrologyNotes

Attributed articles are AstrologyNotes pages which reflect the opinions of specific authors rather than a consensus. These articles should not be edited by anyone other than the original author. The exception to that would be if an Administrator had to make a change to avoid slander, etc.

How to create an attributed article

For the most part, attributed articles are created like any other article, except that the name of the article includes the username. Simply create a link to your article from another article or the sandbox and click on it to edit. For example:

  • Venus in Pisces/Star Alchemist links to the interpretation of Venus in Pisces written by user Star Alchemist. It is part of the article namespace but is entirely separate from the page Venus in Pisces. Since an attributed article represents a specific person's opinion, it is best to write the article in first person and sign it with the signature link button in the edit bar. This makes it very clear who is writing the article and that it is not presented as fact or consensus.
  • User:StarAlchemist/Venus in Pisces also creates and attributed article, but this one will be solely contained in the user namespace. This means it will not show up in searches unless the person chooses the user namespace. Also, other copyright differences apply. If you want to restrict reuse of your articles as defined by the GFDL, then you might want to choose this option.

When to use an attributed (rather than communal) article

An attributed article should contain content that solely reflects an individual opinion and should be edited only by the author (unless they have allowed minor edits). If the content represents a consensus of opinion (even if it is not mainstream) it should be placed in its own article without edit restrictions.

Having a slash in the name does not make it attributed, it must contain a valid AstrologyNotes username. For example, if we wanted to describe the standard interpretation for Venus in Pisces in the eleventh century, we could create a non-attributed article along the lines of Venus in Pisces/eleventh century. We would not create an attributed article, as it represents a consenus of a specific time period, not an individual's opinion.

Specifying who can edit the page

Attributed articles are meant to be edited only by the author, to reflect that person's views on a subject. However, an author may specify that other AstrologyNotes users can edit their article for minor edits (such as grammar and spelling). In that case, the author must place a template at the top of the page which describes who can edit the page.

Edit Templates

Attributed articles should not be edited by anyone other than the author. However, new users don't always know this and might come across your article and think they can edit it. To specify that other users should not edit the attributed article at all, the template {{noedit}} can be placed at the top of the attributed article. It displays like this:

Stop hand.png
The author of this article has requested it not be edited. Please do not edit it.

If the name of any user other than the author is seen in the credits at the bottom of a page that has been protected with the {{noedit}} template, that user's edits will be rolled back and a notice of warning sent to the user.

To specify that other users may perform minor edits on the attributed article, the template {{minoredit}} should be placed at the top of the attributed article. It displays like this:

Caution.PNG The author of this article has requested only minor edits may be made to this article.
Only make minor, non-content changes to the text, such as spelling and grammar.

Copyrights of attributed articles

Creating an attributed article does not change its copyright! All articles in AstrologyNotes hold the GFDL license unless otherwise noted on the article page and the Site Disclaimers. The purpose of attributing the article and restricting edit priviledges are solely to organize individual opinion on a subject and to avoid slander and misrepresentation. If you are concerned about copyright issues, you should create an attributed article in the USER namespace (see previous example).
