Locational astrology is the branch of astrology dealing with the consequences of travel and moving. The more traditional form of analysis is relocational astrology, which deals with the consequences of changing residences. Locational astrology is becoming widely used for temporary charts such as returns. For example, if a solar return chart shows an unwelcome forecast, the astrologer might use locational astrology to determine where on earth a good forecast could be obtained for the client. The client then has the option to move temporarily to the new location (it is only necessary to be there at the moment the solar return occurs). Since casting hundreds of charts to find the best location is prohibitive, mapping software is used to evaluate more than a handful of places. There are more involved forms of locational maps as well; some were drawn by hand and appeared in astrology magazines in the 1940s and 50s. Jim Lewis introduced one form of mapping technique, called Astro*Carto*Graphy, which allows interpretation of time spent in certain parts of the world corresponding with places where certain planets were on angles at the time of birth.

Relocational astrology

A relocational chart is cast for a part of the world that is different than the birth place, but at the same time and date (adjusting for time zone). The planetary configurations (aspects and signs) all remain the same, the major difference in a relocated chart is that the angles and the houses are often different. This type of chart casting is often used when moving to a new home. Although the birth chart is always the most significant indicator of life experience, the locational chart is thought to show changes that occur due to choice, much like a progression chart shows changes that occur due to age. For example, a person who was born with Uranus on the Descendant may choose upon marrying to move to a location which puts Uranus out of aspect to the seventh house, thereby encouraging a stronger marital union.

Note that return charts such as solar returns are increasingly using the idea of relocation in combination with timing. For example, one can choose to temporarily move to a new location for the time at which one's solar return occurs. This allows the casting of a chart for the new location which actually holds sway for the entire year, even if one immediately moves back to their normal place of residence.

Astro*Carto*Graphy

Astro*Carto*Graphy is a technique for locational astrology, in which lines showing the spots that a planet was located on an angle at the time of birth are mapped on a map (hence, cartography). It was pioneered in 1976 by Jim Lewis. It is said to work because some say the angles (AC, IC, DC, and MC) are especially powerful points, and planets poised there gain extra power [1]. Moving to a certain line is said to put one's personality more in touch with that planet, possibly increasing fortune, responsibility, or other traits associated with the planet.

The following is a brief example of how locational mapping (such as Astro*Carto*Graphy) can be interpreted. It is not meant as a reference, but just an example of how one reads such a map.

The map at the right shows a portion of an Astro*Carto*Graphy map for Oprah Winfrey. The black line indicates her Mercury/Descendant map line, which should confer great ability to communicate with others and to have one's words and thoughts accepted and understood. Notice that this line is much closer to California than Mississippi where Oprah was born, or to the east coast. According to the principles of locational astrology, Oprah is more likely to experience success involving communication (such as being a talk show host or counselor) if she works out on the west coast in California, Arizona or Nevada. She is not likely to enjoy listening to other people's thoughts and ideas as much when she is in the East. The white line, however, is her Pluto rising line (Pluto/AC). This line indicates areas of the country where she will experience drastic changes in appearance and outer personality. Therefore, she may not want to stay long in this area of the country if she has physical problems. She should endeavor not to move her home to the areas indicated by the yellow line (Saturn/IC), which indicates restriction and austerity in the home environment.

The map at the left shows locational lines for Oprah on the east coast of the US. The blue line is her Jupiter/MC line, indicating that her career and general reputation should experience a boost in this area of the country. The yellow line is her Moon/IC line, which just happens to fall very close to her place of birth. This part of the country is near and dear to her and she is likely to be drawn back here when she feels insecure or in need of emotional nurturing. She would do well to consider building her home somewhere between the Moon/IC and Jupiter/MC lines to maximize the benefit of both. Of course, this is just a brief example of interpreting locational line mapping, and it does not indicate the only way to interpret such maps or even the best way. In general, the objective is to pinpoint those areas of a country, state or city which present the greatest positive power for what the individual wants to achieve at that point in their life.
