Applying aspect

In terms of astrology and applying aspect is an aspect that is created when a faster moving planet, or significator, is moving towards exactness, or partile, to a slower moving planet, or promittor.

For example, Mercury is a much faster moving planet than Saturn, so if Mercury was approaching a sextile, or angle of 60 degrees, it would be an applying aspect until there were exactly 60 degrees between the two planets. When Mercury moved away from the sextile and was no longer 60 degrees exactly, it would be referred to as a separating aspect.
