Antares (Alpha Scorpii) is one of the four Royal Stars or "four Guardians of Heaven" or "Archangel stars". Antares is the Archangel Oriel and watcher of the West. It is a class M red supergiant star of the first magnitude in the heart of the constellation Scorpius and is the 15th brightest star in the heavens. Because it is a red star it is often mistaken for Mars and it gets it name from the Greek "Ant-Ares" or like Mars.
