Accidental debilities

Accidental debility is a lesser category of debility. Similarly to the case of accidental dignities, accidental debility is determined by a planet’s placement in traditionally unfortunate houses, by the aspects it casts to the infortunes, Fixed Stars, and hypothetical points; by the speed of its motion, and finally by its position with respects to the Sun. Many of the conditions that result in an accidental dignity are simply reverted.

Example 1

Direct motion of a planet is a condition of accidental dignity. The reverse of this condition is retrograde motion. Retrograde motion is one of the accidental debilities.

Example 2

An exact soft aspect to one of the fortunes (Venus and Jupiter) is considered an accidental dignity. Hence a planet in partile trine to Venus will be dignified accidentally. Let’s try and revert this condition.

An exact soft aspect to one of the fortunes becomes an exact hard aspect to one of the infortunes Hence a planet in partile opposition to Mars will be debilitated accidentally.

Accidental debilites – and their score according to William Lilly are the following:

• Placement in the 12th house: -5
• Placement in the 6th or in the 8th house: -2
• Retrogradation: -5
• Slower than average daily motion: -2
• Occidental: -2. This condition applies only to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars
• Decreasing in light: - 2. This condition applies only to the Moon
• Combust: -5
• Under the Sun’s beams: - 4
• Partile conjunction with Cauda draconis: -4
• Besiegment: -5
• Partile opposition to Saturn or Mars: -4
• Partile square to Saturn or Mars: -3
• Conjunct Algol: -5. In this case the conjunction orb is 5 degrees.
