Abraham bar Hiyyâ (1070? - 1136?). Mathematician and astronomer, Abraham bar Hiyyâ was also know as "Ha - Nasi", meaning in Hebrew "the leader" or as Savasorda, the latter being a Latin corruption of the Arabic court title of Sahib as-Shurta.

Bar Hiyyâ cross-fertilized studies in mathematics and astronomy originated from the Arab, Jewish and European cultures.

Little is known about his biography. He lived in Barcelona, where he translated several works from Arabic into Latin. A multi-lingual scholar, he was the author of the first Arab algebra written in Europe - the Treatise on Measurement and Calculation (Hibbur ha-Meshisha we-ha-Tishboret); of the first encyclopaedia written in Hebrew - the Foundation of Understanding and the Tower of Faith (Yesod ha-Tebunah u-Migdal ha-Emunam), besides authoring several works on arithmetics, geometry, astronomy, optics and music.

He was the author of Megillat ha-Megalleh, an historical work based on astrology.
