The square is a fourth harmonic aspect in which the angle formed by division is 90°. When two points are squared it means that from a geocentric position on earth, the two bodies appear to be at right angles in the zodiac. The number four is equal to 2x2 (a perfect square) and has the numerological significance of caution and rigidity. The square is more stubborn than the opposition, actively fighting integration of the two energies. Two points that are squared are not in the same gender or element but they share the same quality. If both planets are in cardinal signs, action is likely to be quick and possibly explosive. If both are in fixed signs, the action may involve stubbornness. If both are in mutable signs, the action may involve restlessness and unreliability. The speed and likelihood of action will also be affected by the quality of the houses, whether angular, cadent or succedent.

The sheer discomfort of the square provides motivation to improve, and a necessary push to soft aspects like the trine. Consequently, it is generally considered a good thing to have a few squares in the chart. If effort is applied to resolving the issues represented by the squared planets, eventually strength and self-control are the result. An analogy would be a person who is forced to wear weights on their arms and legs, but when they focus hard they can remove the weights and use their full strength. Eventually, their abilities become quite impressive.
